Kenya: Reviving a Legacy Crop.
Cotton was once Kenya's second-biggest employer. With recent government investment, BT cotton approval, and growing global demand for verified African fibre, Kenya's cotton sector is positioned for a significant revival.
The Kenya Cotton Story
Kenya's cotton sector reached its peak in the mid-1980s before declining sharply following liberalisation and the withdrawal of government support. The crop's legacy remains strong among farming communities in the Rift Valley and Coast regions, and the knowledge base exists to rebuild rapidly given the right support infrastructure.
eko·kotton is working in Kenya to build on the government's renewed commitment to cotton, establishing programme partnerships with cooperatives in high-potential growing zones and connecting Kenyan cotton to the premium market channels it deserves.
